Takanori Bio Part 2 (Private Life)
OK, so, for the past several weeks, I've been working on a Takanori bio for my site, I'm sill not finished 100%, but I'm posting what I have done now. If anyone has any additional details, references, or better images they can provided, I'd be extremely grateful.

Anything in dark blue is a reference/source, light blue are my comments, and red is a question or request. Also, I omitted anything expected, like tours TV/Radio/Magazine appearances, unless they were of special significance.

And, please feel free to copy any of this to Wikipedia. ^_^

The full version, with dozes more pics, is on my website Here.

Private Life:

Family and Relationships:
The Nishikawa family crest, Maru Mokkou [Kanji?]

His father, Yasuhiro (康宏) was originally from Sonno-cho in Nagahama and was a government worker in Shiga prefecture, possibly affiliated with the fire department, though he probably wasn't actually an actual firefighter. His mother, Kazuko (一子), was from Moriyama and was a dental hygienist in a government affiliated office [He's repeatedly stated that BOTH his parents were government workers. That wouldn't be the case if she'd worked for a private practice.], and has also lectured in a dental hygienist school [citation needed]. He had at least one uncle, who seems to have held a government job too (he's also mentioned cousins). Also, his now-deceased, maternal grandfather was a retired police sergeant. [And, I should probably note that both of his parents are still alive. The past tense when talking about them there is because they've both long-since left their hometowns and are now retired. ^_^;]

He's the eldest son of three siblings and has two little sisters, who have five children between them. It seems that his nieces and nephews have a habit of calling him "big brother" (nii-chan), rather than any term for uncle, though the family apparently discourages this. Takanori has speculated that they do this because that's how their mothers refer to him. [Hanamaru Market 10/17/07]

* * * * *

On April 2nd, 1999 he married Yoshimura Yumi from Puffy. In 2002, allegations appeared in the media, accusing Yoshimura of infidelity. On July 1st of that year, it was reported that they had divorced. However, Takanori has stated repeatedly that they have remained friends, and that he does not regret the marriage at all. [Marco Porori on 8/16/09 and Bokura no Jidai (with Gackt and DAIGO) on 4/25/10]

[The 2006 Under:Cover photobook has some fairly steamy looking pics of him and some girl, but I have no idea who it is.]

In 2007 he began dating actress Otsuka Chihiro, who played his love interest in the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". They broke up for unknown reasons sometime in June of 2009.

In July of 2011, a tabloid posted [highly questionably] pictures of him and 22 year-old model Nanao (who he'd co-stared with on two radio shows, DOKI DOKI Shouhin Kenkyuujo (as a Doki Doki Girl) and Pakkun Tamago (as a college student), at that point. Meaning they do know each other and have reason to be speaking) together on a street corner, which the tabloid declared was them on a date. The pictures were spiced up with a salacious article, derived entirely from "anonymous sources" about them secretly dating for months and living together in his "luxurious mansion". At this time, no official sources have confirmed this, and there has been no further evidence of this "relationship" given in anything that could be considered a reputable source. [Though, the fact that this idea is out there is, in fact, deeply problematic. See, Takanori has on numerous occasions, spoken out against excessive thinness and extreme dieting. Since we all know what professional modeling entails, and leads to, this has become a somewhat huge issue, with people beginning to doubt his character, based on his supposed relationship with a super-thin professional model. The most common criticisms I've seen leveled at him from (now former) fans are things like "fake", "liar", and "hypocrite". It's really bad.]

* * * * *

In early September of 2007, he received a female French Teacup Poodle from his family. Her name is Wi (うぃ), though he almost always calls her "Wi-san". The name comes from a play on words, crossing the French word Oui (yes) with the Japanese word 愛い/Ui (loveable). He has also called her "the Princess". He initially believed her birthday was June 29th, though he learned in 2011 that it was, in fact the 28th. [As a side note, although she's "apricot" now, her fur use to be "red".]

He also had a dog when he was a child, which may have been a Pomeranian [At any rate, his parents once owned a Pomeranian, that has passed away. I don't know if it's the dog he had as a kid or not.]. And around the TMR-e era he had a male cat, named Janken-kun.

* * * * *

He has a ton of friends, mostly among other musicians and other people he's worked with, such as fellow singers Gackt and TETSUYA and scriptwriter Kitagawa Eriko (who wrote Beautiful Life) and stylist Tazawa Mika (who's done his hair in the past, but has NOT slept with him). [And many many more. I just went with a random selection there.]

Among them is a group of friends known as the "西川会" (Nishikawa club). This group consists of Shogo from 175R (who's responsible for arranging most of their get-together's) [IENOMI birthday special], Micro from Home Made Kazoku, Takuya∞ from UVERworld, and Taka from One OK Rock.

He's also very close with several Owarai comedians, such as Akashiya Sanma, Yasei Bakudan, Kobayashi Kendo, Miyagawa Daisuke, and Downtown. [His friendship with Sanma is well known, Yasei Bakudan co-stars with him on Mata x2, Kendo and Miyagawa he names as friends on Marco Porori (and Kendo's on Mata x2 as well), and he kinda references his friendship with Downtown here.]

Early Life:
It's often believed that he was born in Yasu, but he was actually born in Hikone [Japanese Wikipedia says this, and the bio in the FLAGS PV confirms it]. Supposedly, his family moved to Yasu when his grandfather transferred to the local police department.[citation needed] Unsurprisingly, he's said he was quite hyper as a child. More surprisingly, he's also said he was shy. [IENOMI, 10/30]

[Kindergarden?]

In elementary school, at the recommendation of his grandfather he studied Kendo as his club activity, even winning tournaments. [I've read that, in elementary school, most kids either do Kendo or something else (I think it was Judo), but I don't remember where I saw that.] Because both his parents worked, he would frequently stay with his grandfather, including staying with him every weekend, to the point that he's stated he spent so much time with his grandfather that he never played catch with his own father. He's described his grandfather as very strict, but never the less, he loved him very much. His grandfather even took him to see his first live concert (Tsuruta Kouji) and his first movie (203 Kouchi). When he was about 10, his grandfather passed away. Afterwards he would stay home alone, where he began listening to the radio. From this he discovered types of music he'd never heard before, such as western music like the Billboard Top 40. He's said that this music came to fill the hole in his heart left by his beloved grandfather's death. [Almost all of that is taken from a Mu-Jack interview on 4/14/07.]

At some point, he began babysitting his younger sisters. Apparently, he would cook pancakes for them.

In middle (and high) school he played handball [known as "team handball" in the US]. During an "Ouen" tournament in his third year of middle school, he somehow ended up performing as an "ouendan-chou", even doing the choreography himself. He was on the field trip committee as well. He was also in charge of the illustrations for his middle school Graduation Anthology, as he'd been good at drawing since elementary school. [That's almost all from Wikipedia. I have no references for it.] At one point, he even wanted to be a fine arts teacher when he grew up, as he felt it was a good midpoint between the government work his parents did, and his then-dream of having a job where he could draw. [He said that when he guested on Shin Domoto Kyoudai on 3/18/07.]

During a middle school culture festival he stood on a stage for the first time, doing the vocals for a western music cover band. After that, he felt "singing" was his destiny. He eventually came to spend all his time with "Elf", his cover band. [I've never seen a proper reference for this story, but he started to tell it on the 7/17/11 SDK episode.]

While in high school he was so busy with his band activity that he was often late, left school early and ultimately dropped out. (He's jokingly referred to this as his "slightly early graduation".) After begging his parent's forgiveness, and with the support of his uncle, he left home and moved to Osaka. There, he enrolled in the musical composition department of the "Osaka School of Music", while working part time in an Udon restaurant. Living alone, Takanori became quite proficient at keeping house and cooking. While attending the school he met the other members of what would eventually become Luis-Mary. They started the band while still in school but, because of their growing fame (and subsequent obligations) he wasn't really able to attend lessons, and didn't graduate. [IENOMI - 9/5/11]

[Meeting with TETSUYA?]

Other Info:
* Physically, Takanori is well-known for his near-perfect, pale complexion, though he actually dislikes it, as he says it makes him look exactly like his mother. [Shin Domoto Kyoudai - 8/28/11] He's also repeatedly said that he prefers women with extremely fair complexions. [He's said that on the '07 SDK episode and an episode of (what appears to be titled) "Bull Bull Untouchable" on 4/13/07] [He's also known for being almost totally body-hairless.]

Although he has a smaller stature and a naturally small build, he is extremely muscular [I've heard he can bench twice his body weight, have no source.]. As such, even though he still has most of his old stage costumes, most of them no longer fit him, as he's developed significantly more muscle mass than what he had when he first started out.

*Apparently, he's believed to physically resemble "なんでか?フラメンコ" (Nande ka? Flamenco)'s guitar comedian Sakai Susumu [I've seen pictures of the dude. I DO NOT see it.]. As a result, there was once an urban legend that he was actually Sakai's illegitimate child. As a result, Sakai once appeared on the music show "うたばん" (Utaban) singing "White Breath" while wearing a half-naked outfit similar to Nishikawa's and standing in front of a fan. Nishikawa, in return, hosted an episode of "♪な~んでか?" (♪Na~nde ka?). [I've seen this talked about before, and I know something was printed in "Tokyo Sports", but I don't have links.]

* As Shiga is in Kansai, he naturally speaks (the Shiga variant of) Kansai-ben. However, he can and does use standard Japanese, usually when appearing on TV and such. However, if there are other people from Kansai there, there will often be an "explosion" of Kansai-ben.

* He is well-known for being very skilled at conversation. He is also considered very funny, being able to do "Boke & Tsukkomi" on the level of a professional. Famous comedian and close friend Akashiya Sanma has said he is "very skilled" and wished he would "quite being a singer and come [host variety shows]". [citation needed] There is even an urban legend that he worked for Yoshimoto. He never did, he promises. [:P] [Off the top of my head, I've seen the urban legend mentioned on his first appearance on LoveLove Aishiteru on 7/19/97]

* Apparently, Takanori does not like heights. [Supposedly, there's a DVD where he's in a very high building and looks terrified. Does anyone know what DVD this is?]

* He loves cars very, very much, and often uses them as a source of inspiration. He owns a Porsche Cayenne TURBO and a Mercedes-Benz Carlsson CLK CM60RS with custom after-market modifications done by Rolf Hartge, making it a one-in a kind. It's rumored that he absolutely will not let other people drive it. [This is all from Wikipedia, and is older info.]. Despite this love of cars, he was much older when he got his license. [As of sometime during the TMR-e era, after April of 1999, he still didn't have it. I have no clue when he did get it.]

* Takanori also loves anime, or "Anume" as he sometimes calls it. He's joked that, as a child anime was his only friend. [IENOMI - 10/30] As an adult, he loves watching it whenever he can and has a massive collection of shows on Blu-Ray. He use to collect manga and figures as well, but space became an issue [IENOMI 9/19] and he gave most of those away when he moved. Also, he's said he will only do songs for anime he likes. If he gets an offer to do a theme song for a show, but he's not interested in the show, he'll pass on the offer. [I can't find the interview I saw that in.]

* Film wise, he loves Sci-Fi and Fantasy and dislikes horror movies. The original Star Wars movies are among his favorites. He doesn't really like going to theaters, preferring to stay home with his 141-inch 3D television [Pakkun Tamago - 6/10], though he did enjoy the US premier of Spider-Man 2. [Apparently, the thing he dislikes about theaters is hearing other people eat, but the US audience was, well, louder, so the sound wouldn't have been as evident, making it more tolerable.]

* Takanori loves food and is very skilled at cooking. In particular, he likes drinking straight condensed milk and really loves "Yukari" shrimp crackers. [Pakkun Tamago - 10/30/11] He also likes spicy foods, but doesn't eat them much, as he reacts strongly to capsaicin. [Pakkun Tamago - 4/15/11] Despite his...affinity for strawberries, his favorite fruit is, in fact, Banana apples [Mata Mata Gocha Maze! - 3/6/11]. He also seldom drinks carbonated beverages, and when he does, he prefers to let them go flat first. [Pakkun Tamago - 9/23/11] He really like Aojiru.

* In 2010, Takanori decided to move. He spent a very long time and a huge chunk of the savings he kept for such things buying and renovating his new home. [IENOMI - 9/19/11] Making changes like converting a spare bathroom into a room for his dog, and spending a great deal of time trying to find just the right (very expensive) faucets for the guest bath. Prior to moving, he gave away almost all his stuff, and re-bought everything he needed. He's referred to this as a "cleansing".

-- Takanori's new house also has a massive guest bath, with a giant TV. He and his friends will get in the bath together, drink and watch movies together. He says that is they "squeeze in" together, five-six people can fit in there.

According to Domoto Koichi, once he was over there with a few other people, and someone just went and got in the bath without even asking. (They discovered this when they heard him yelling about how awesome it was.) Takanori says he's occasionally found guests sound asleep in his guest bedroom. [Shin Domoto Kyoudai - 11/20/11]

* Speaking of which, in February of 2011, he went for a "厄払い" (Yakubarai). He's said he does this because he thinks it something that should be done at that 'age', whether you believe in it or not. [Pakkun Tamago - 2/4/11] [As a side note, he had this done at a Buddhist Temple, rather than a Shinto Shrine, though for most Japanese people there's very little difference there.]

* On a more negative note, Takanori does smoke. He has for a long time, and says he's never even thought of quitting. [IENOMI - 8/22/11]

* And there is, in fact, one imperfect thing about Takanori, and that is his eyesight. Takanori actually has astigmatism; one eye is "almost normal" but the other has very poor sight (not sure which one). Despite this, most of the glasses he constantly wears are, in fact, fashion glasses. He says this is because a pain to get glasses specially made for his condition, so he usually just wears contacts for vision correction [and then wears fashion glass over the contacts]. He's considered getting LASIK, but hasn't done so yet. [Mata Mata Gocha Maze! - 4/3/11]

* While on tour, he'll hang out with everyone, having dinner together and such, but then he likes to go back to his hotel room and have some quite time, which he very often uses to hand-polish his shoes. [Shin Domoto Kyoudai - 11/20/11] Also, there was once an incident where he left all his socks and underwear in the hotel laundry, and ended up doing a show commando. In his MC he asked fans to please give him socks and underwear as fans presents. (He actually prefers this, since, when everyone gives him sweets, he gets too much and can't eat it all before it goes bad. [DOKI DOKI Shouhin Kenkyuujo - 8/7/11] He also gets a ridiculous amount of plushies. He usually waits until he has a bunch, and then donated them to a children's charity. [Mata Mata Gocha Maze! - 4/3/11]) He even ended up wearing a pair of fan given socks in an episode of "Okusama wa 18sai".

LOL Holy shit. How do you know all this stuff?

I'm actually reading the website with pics and just commenting here. Did you put those captions on the family pic yourself, or was that him?
Because LOL "First-Born Sun"

About Wi: no mention of the possible Wii connection? Its dev name is Revolution and all that ^^ It's pure speculation but could be included if noted at such.

"Random selection" indeed. Such a RANDOM COINCIDENTAL piece of pink fluff that was.

Yasei Bakudan are a duo - so you should correct the grammar there to reflect the plural #nitpick

Also isn't it MiyaKawa Daisuke? No rendaku for him, I think.
(randomly, he was on Gocha Maze! for a logn time... as the replacement for TETSUYA during L'Arc's 2007 and 2008 tours!)

[Meeting With TETSUYA?]
What do you need to know? Ask and a Bird will provide. For starters, http://www.tetsuya-uk.org/nanani/?p=1209 is specifically about that, though they have mentioned the meetign in other places too.

" If he gets an offer to do a theme song for a show, but he's not interested in the show, he'll pass on the offer. [I can't find the interview I saw that in.]"
I wonder when he got confident enough as an artist to be able to do that. Surely in the early years he woudln't exactly have been in a position to refuse..? If the label would even let him? #randomthoughts

*headdesk* The Japanese captions were him, the English were me...Freudian slip and all....

I completely forgot about that...

"Random selection" indeed. Such a RANDOM COINCIDENTAL piece of pink fluff that was.

Well, OK, some were less random than others. >_> And, uh, I totally added the section on comedian friends solely as a pretext to use that screencap (though I left it untranslated as an Easter Egg. XD).

Yasei Bakudan are a duo - so you should correct the grammar there to reflect the plural #nitpick

Yeah, now that I look at that, it isn't clear if you don't already know

Also isn't it MiyaKawa Daisuke? No rendaku for him, I think.

That's what I get for adding this section just after writing up the Rendaku description. LOL

What do you need to know? Ask and a Bird will provide.

Cool! I think that's what I need! (I'd heard a bunch of different things, but if conflicted with other stuff, or the timeline didn't make sense, so I wasn't sure what was correct).

Also, do you know the name of the Fruity kindergarten?

I wonder when he got confident enough as an artist to be able to do that. Surely in the early years he wouldn't exactly have been in a position to refuse..? If the label would even let him? #randomthoughts

Yeah, but this seems to be if, like, they seek him out to do the song. I'd think that, by the time he was prominent enough that studios were going "We want TMR to do the theme song!" and coming to him, he'd be well established enough to say something like "No thank you. I don't think I could properly do your show justice".

And, it's not like he had problems finding tie-ins, so I don't think the label has anything to worry about there. ^_~
Nananinanani on November 26th, 2011 03:38 am (UTC)
Fruity Kindergaten is just 米原市立幼稚園 (Maibara City Kindergarten I suppose, but I don't have any official English) though it probably had a different name back in the 70s, for one thing Maibara wasn't a -shi at the time!
I don't know if it was anything other than logically obvious 米原町幼稚園.

I'm also not even sure Takanori -really- went there, my sources there are quite unnoficial. I AM sure about TETSUYA and Ken though!
If you have a more reliable souce, that'd be great.
